One of the many things I love about our house is the large mudroom and second staircase you see when you enter from the back porch. Mudrooms are such a functional space, especially with Boston winters. A place to kick off your snowy gear without tracking it all over the house.
The previous homeowners used this space as an office but we have plans to make this into a functional mudroom with durable flooring, storage, and of course some pretty since it’s our back entrance!
The first wall you see when you enter from the back porch will have a console table, lamp, and art. A pretty space to greet you but also somewhere to drop your keys and mail. The picture below is the perfect balance of style and function.
To make this space function as a mudroom storage is a must. We will build a bench with drawers and hooks to serve our everyday needs for shoes, coats, and backpacks. Next to the built-in bench will be a closet for any additional storage needs. I love how McGee & Co. designed the built-ins below and that the bench is incorporated with the closet.
Lastly, the carpet will be removed and a durable floor installed. I have dreamed of a herringbone floor ever since I first laid eyes on one during a trip to Prague and then further cemented my love for this pattern when visiting Charleston, SC this past summer. It ain’t the easiest of floors to lay but go hard or go home am I right? I really love the look of the slate, pictured below, but we are most likely going with a budget-friendly porcelain tile.
I can see the new layout despite all the green, can you?
