It’s that time of year again and I’m excited to be participating in the Fall One Room Challenge! This will be my second time joining the ultimate design blogging event. During the Spring 2020 challenge, I completed my youngest daughter’s nursery. Although I joined on a whim with not much of a plan I thoroughly enjoyed the process. For one, it pushes you to complete a space, great for those 90% club members like me! But more importantly, it’s about a community that supports and uplifts one another long after the event is over.
The Space
Over the next 8 weeks, I will be refreshing my middle daughter’s bedroom. Up until this summer, it was a shared bedroom with her older sister. When we moved into our house, 2.5 years ago, it was the first room to get decorated. In order to get them excited about our new house, I gave them free rein over their space and collectively they picked out rainbow bedding and aqua lights. We painted the walls, used their existing furniture, rug and the bedroom was “complete”. To be fair it’s a sweet bedroom and well liked but has always felt void of their personalities. Gracie, my mauve loving, curly haired, creative and silly gal deserves a space that reflects her especially now that the room is “ALL HERS”!
the plan
After chatting and taking her likes and dislikes into consideration here is where we landed. She wants a “cool wall treatment”, a color palette of mauve and light blue, a full size bed and space for her art table and creations.
I think it’s so important that her room reflects her but also complements our house aesthetic so with a budget of $1,000, I will be create a room that reflects her likes as a six year old but can easily be updated as she matures.
SO, HERE’S WHAT I’M GOING TO TACKLE OVER THE NEXT 8 WEEKS:
- Fix a cracked window pane and restore (2) of our 120 year old windows.
- Stencil the walls using a beautiful floral stencil in a neutral paint
- Switch out her current bed for a full size bed that will be painted (found on Facebook Marketplace)
- Update her IKEA dresser with new hardware and IKEA hacked drawer fronts
- Paint her existing night stand
- Build a radiator cover
- We will keep her existing overhead light but will add additional task lighting
- Create a space for her art table that will include shelves to display creations
- Make no-sew curtains
I’m really excited to create this space for her. She has asked that I keep some elements a surprise as she wants a grand reveal at the end, which I can’t wait for! I will posting to Instagram stories regularly so if you’d like to follow along and see behind the pictures head on over to Flynn Haus.
Be sure to head over to the One Room Challenge Blog to check out all of the spaces that the designers and guest participants will be making over. My favorite part besides tackling a space is following along and encouraging participants along the way.
