Welcome to Week Six of Better Homes and Garden One Room Challenge. Week Five of The One Room Challenge was cancelled to stand in solidarity over racial injustice and the #blacklivesmatter movement. I have spent my time listening, learning and reflecting and will continue to educate myself on how to fight racial injustice and be an ally in support of change.
You can catchup on my weekly progress during Week One, Week Two, Week Three and Week Four. Also, be sure to check the ORC blog to see what all the designers and guest participants are up to during Week Six. There are so many talented participants and amazing spaces!
One of the major components of the nursery is the addition of a wardrobe. The room has no closet and is tiny (hello 13′ x 7.5′) so the wardrobe needed to be small in scale but also have enough depth for hanging clothes. This IKEA wardrobe met my criteria (about 2.5′ wide and fits a full size hanger) and the price is pretty unbeatable too! The only downside was I didn’t love the look – the lines were great but it was lacking personality.
And then it dawned on me…CANE! Cane furniture is having a major moment and I have been lusting after a few pieces for a little while now. It seemed like I could easily add cane to the front panels of the wardrobe for instant appeal. This IKEA hack by Kathryn of House of Hawkes stopped me in my tracks and I knew I needed to give it a go!
I bought my materials (umm finding cane right now is super difficult) but managed to find a seller on Etsy and then patiently waited for it to arrive. And then it sat in my front entry for weeks! I majorly procrastinated and waited until yesterday afternoon to start this project! Not the best time to start with three tired and hungry kiddos but I was determined to meet the deadline! I had originally planed to cut the panels out but since my procrastination got the best of me that was out of the question. The next best solution was to cut the cane to size, use spray adhesive and then cross all the things that it would adhere!
It totally worked and I am smitten! Swapped out the hardware for these blush leather pulls and the wardrobe was transformed in under two hours. I planned on painting the wardrobe and cane Simply White by Benjamin Moore but am really loving the two toned look but also thinking a sweet blush would look great too. I’m going to live with it while other components of the room come together and then make my final decision.
Happy to see Week Six wrapped up but the panic is starting to set in! I still hate the finish of the dresser from Week Three and somehow need to fix it, build a radiator cover (which I’ve never done) and oh yeah, stumbled upon an amazing wallpaper that I couldn’t pass up so now need to remove texture wallpaper from a wall and then wallpaper. Yikes…better not procrastinate this time around!

You did a great job on the caning, it looks great! We’re also adding caning to the front of our nightstands that we built and I’m hoping we don’t screw up!
