Creating A seasonal capsule wardrobe for kids will declutter overstuffed closets and simplify your morning routine.
For as long as I’ve been a Mum I’ve struggled with the amount of clothing we acquire. From generous grandparents and hand me downs to picking up clothing here and there, it is out of control. The girl’s closets are stuffed, their dressers overflowing, and lets not even talk about the number of bins stored with hand me downs! With the start of school fast approaching and the unknown and anxiety around what this year will look like the last thing I want is for clothing to add to the stress. Enter my take on a back to school capsule wardrobe which will work if we are learning in person or virtually!

My top 5 tips for creating a kid capsule wardrobe
- Know what you have and sort their existing clothing. They might fight you on this but have your kids put their clothing into keep and pass along piles. It will give you an idea of what style and colors they like and what gaps you need to fill in.
- Simplify your shopping by picking 2 to 3 stores to purchase from. It will save you time (even if it’s online) and will be easier to coordinate styles from fewer brands.
- Think about quality. I have 3 girls and we pass down A LOT of clothing. I make sure to purchase good quality clothing that wears and lasts longer.
- Purchase the staples because the whole point is that all the articles of clothing work together! I like to go with solids, stripes and polka dots that are easily interchangeable.
- Involve your kids by letting them pick out 1 to 2 items that breaks the above rule. After all they are kids and sometimes they just need that floral skirt that will be worn once!
How many outfits do you think we can get out of 3 long sleeve T’s, 3 sweatshirts, 2 jackets, 6 pants, 1 skirt, 1 overall and 3 pairs of shoes? Let’s see…
Only 20 outfits would fit on my graphic but I could have made more! Bonus, this wardrobe will easily transition into winter with the addition of winter boots, jacket, hat and gloves. Going from an overflowing closet and dresser to a 19 piece capsule wardrobe, I’d say that’s winning! I see no more tears and fights in our morning routine!
