It’s hard to believe Week 7 of One Room Challenge is here! I still have a radiator cover to build and all the finishing touches to add but I’m excited to see her bedroom come together next week especially now that her DIY ring top linen curtains are up!
If you’re new here, welcome and thank you for following along on my budget friendly bedroom refresh for my middle daughter, Gracie. You can click on the links below for progress that I’ve made over the past 5 weeks.
WEEK ONE. WEEK TWO. WEEK THREE. WEEK FOUR. WEEK FIVE. WEEK SIX. WEEK SEVEN. WEEK EIGHT
Linen curtains are high up on my wants list for Gracie’s bedroom refresh. My go to favorite store bought linen curtains are Pottery Barn’s Emery Linen but at $169 a panel, way out of budget. This bedroom refresh is all about getting the look for less so sewing (and no sew curtains) is a great option that will save you money. A favorite source for fabric is Etsy. The more specific you can be in your search the better. I searched “stripped linen fabric by the yard” and found the dreamiest linen fabric in a color that is an almost exact match to her stenciled wall color – Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray.
I was all set to DIY ring top linen curtains when I pulled out my sewing machine and it was broken. Ugh. I was about to pivot to no sew curtains, when Ryan suggested I reach out to my Mother In Law, Kathy. The most amazing seamstress in all the land. Asking for help is tough for me, but I knew I needed the help and taking one thing off on my to do list would be the greatest gift. Kathy, of course happily accepted and whipped out the most amazing 4 panels in now time. Like seriously, I would still be sewing!
We modeled the panels after my favorite Pottery Barn ones which are a simple hemmed panel with ring top. We created the ring top by adding pleat tape to the header and purchasing these drapery hooks. This pleat tape is 2.8″ so be sure to add yardage to your panels to accommodate this! My finished panel length is 88″, just kissing the floor, and cut the fabric at 98″ to accommodate the bottom and top hem.
The panels are hung with my favorite Amazon curtain rod and these rings. They’re a really great affordable option. I have them in my dining room, bedroom and Isabelle’s bedroom – all different finishes and all are great!
At just under $22 a yard I spent $283.66 for 13 yards of linen fabric. Technically I only needed 12 but I’ve been short yardage in the past and always buy a little more! The pleat tape and curtain tape hooks came out to $29.73. A total of $313.39 or $78.35 per panel. While still on the expensive side it’s a great deal in comparison to $169 a panel I was looking at. It’s definitely the look for less with these DIY ring top linen curtains
Be sure to head over to the One Room Challenge Blog to check out all of the spaces that the designers and guest participants will be making over. My favorite part besides tackling a space is following along and encouraging participants along the way.
