Painting our original Trim work white
The power of paint is truly amazing! Our entry felt like a time capsule to years gone by with it’s natural baseboards and trim. It was dark and tired and didn’t feel like the rest of our house. I knew painting was the answer but worried that doing so would erase the charm of our 120 year old home. I procrastinated for over a year and then on a whim with paint and brush in hand I gathered the courage to throw caution to the wind and tackle the project. Boy, am I glad I did!
The baseboards, doorway trim, back stair skirt, stair risers and stairwell window were painted Simply White by Benjamin Moore. I maintained the charm of our entry by leaving the stained glass window and staircase natural. These two original architectural details now pop against the white trim and are the crown jewel of the space.
Painting natural wood takes a little bit of extra prep work but it’s totally worth it. Start with a liquid sandpaper followed by a good primer, Kilz happens to be my favorite. My trim work took two coats of primer and then two coats of interior paint. I used Behr Ultra Scuff Defense color matched to Benjamin Moore Simply White. It was my first time using the scuff defense and I was super happy with the application and will be interested to see how well it holds up on the stair risers.
And now for a whole bunch of before and afters!
I’m more then pleased at how this project came out. Paint truly can transform a space. Ours was dark and tired and now it is fresh and bright. I’m excited for phase two of the project which will include wall trim, wallpaper a new light fixture and possibly a stair runner.
