As the child of a former elementary school librarian, books especially children’s picture books are very near and dear to me. They allow for a quite moment at the end of a choatic day to connect and cuddle. These are currently some of our favorite new and old Fall and Halloween picture books.
fall Children’s books
Leif and the Fall – A wonderful tale of Leif, a leaf, and his friend Laurel as they try to find a different way down as all the leaves begin to fall. A greater message of failing but finding success by persistence and creativity.
Sweep – Is new to our library and a story about big feelings that can easily take over and get out of control. Beautifully illustrated but more importantly a great opportunity to discuss big feelings that are hard to articulate.
Little Acorn – A sweet board book that discusses the life cycle of an acorn tree.
Fletcher and the Falling Leaves – Is another new addition to our library this season. Fletcher, a fox, is trying to save his beloved tree whose leaves are falling. Beautifully written and illustrated about the change and wonder of the seasons.
The Scarecrows’ Wedding – Any book by Julia Donaldson can do no wrong in my opinion (author of the Gruffalo) and this book doesn’t disappoint. It is full of humor and a silly way to enjoy the feeling of Fall.
Halloween Children’s books
Gilbert the Ghost – A sweet story about an unlikely friendship and the delight of being different. A fun and sweet read.
Five Black Cats – A cute Halloween book that is great to read out loud and can be made interactive by pointing out shapes, numbers and reoccurring critters.
Stumpkin – Is another new book to our library and is such a delight on the eyes. The book is about differences and acceptance and the importance of seeing past them.
Pick a Pumpkin – The last new book to our collection this season and is such a pleasure to read out loud and the illustrations are darling.
Room of the Broom – my absolute favorite Halloween book that we read all year long. The story is fun and lighthearted and the perfect way to celebrate the Halloween season.
And to prove just how beloved Room on the Broom is to our family here we are four Halloween’s ago dressed as the witch, cat, dog and dragon!
I hope you check out some of these lovely books and enjoy a moment getting lost in the pages. And as my Mum would say…snip, snap, snout. This tale is told out!
